STOUT 13 23 14 12 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 15 09 10 11 11 25 15 19 29 14 15 17 18 (18969) R1b1c9; Aboriginal Orkney - Germanic / Scandanavian; According to Black, the surname may be equivalent to the Scottish Stott. The name may mean "firm" or "bold", and there is a place name in Orkney known as Stout Farthing in Holm recorded in 1500, suggesting that the name has been long established in Orkney. In Shetland Stout is associated with Fair Isle, and Dunrossness, a James STOUT of Lie in the latter place beging recorded in 1688. In addition there was a "Sigurd the Stout" who was Earl of Orkney (985 - 1014). It is possible that his descendants took on the nickname as a surname; Tradition has it that the earliest Shetland ancestor was one Thomas STOUT, sent to Fair Isle by the SSPCK religious society as a teacher. This participant wishes to check out various hypotheses such as a possible Hanseatic German connection; and also confirm relationships with other STOUTS, particularly since there were some Court hearings about illegitimacy thus this study within the Project will act as a paternity test, and an exploration of kinship; Thomas STOUT, born 1756, Shirva, Fair Isle who married Grizel SMITH, supposed son of Thomas STOUT, born 1717, Shirva, Fair Isle, possibly son of Thomas STOUT and brother of Magnus STOUT born 1720; There are 22 matches with 9 markers to individuals from Spain to Poland in the YHRD database, with proportionately more matches in Germany. There are 18 matches at 12/12 in the FTDNA customer database, two are the STOUTS below, and there is a BROWN (16517) at one mutational step removed. The Haplogroup Database matches are in Denmark and surrounds, with no matches to Spain and Portugal (which would be typical of Celtic profiles). What becomes interesting is to explore the match profile at the higher resolution. Considering the apparent degree of relationship (3rd cousins) it is somewhat unusual to find the match diminish to 21/25, and 32/37 the third cousin (18997) and 32/37 to the Stout (19072) more distantly related - but certainly a similar phenomenon is seen in other families; The data below will reveal some interesting findings in relation to the above material and hypotheses. |
STOUT 13 23 14 12 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 17 09 10 11 11 25 15 19 29 15 15 17 18 (18997) R1b1c9; Aboriginal Orkney - Germanic / Scandanavian; See above; See above; See above. This participant is third cousin to (18969) above where Thomas STOUT and Grizel SMITH had a son George STOUT, born 1796, who in turn has a son Thomas STOUT born 1827 Taing, Fair Isle (gg-grandfather of present participant and of 18969 above); See above and below. This participant upgraded to 37 markers and the "match" with BROWN (16517) disappeared (26/37), highlighting the importance of upgrading to 37 markers ; See above. |
STOUT 13 23 14 12 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 18 09 10 11 11 25 15 19 29 15 15 17 18 (19072) R1b1c9; Aboriginal Orkney - Germanic / Scandanavian; See above; See above; Magnus STOUT, born 1720, Leogh, Fair Isle, brother to above Thomas STOUT, born 1717, supposed sons of Thomas STOUT; As to matches wihtin the Project, all three STOUTS match 12/12. At the 25 marker level this participant matches 18997, 24/25 as well as BROWN (16517). At the 37 marker level this participant matches 36/37 with 18997, but 32/37 with 18969 - showing a somewhat unusual pattern of marker mutations between three individuals whose ancestor in common lived in the 18th Century. The reason for this variability is unknown (however mutatiions can occur at any time, and chance factors operate); The genealogical data and the relative infrequency of the DNA signature make it clear that all three Stouts are kin. The paper trail has thus been supported by the DNA findings. In addition by virtue of the S21 positive finding in the Y-chromosome special testing, it would appear that the STOUTs are of Germanic / Scandinavian stock which in Britain means anything from Anglo - Saxon to Norse Viking. |
