(21693)
R1b;  Aboriginal Shetland - (Germanic / Scandinavian); Patronymic; None reported; William
Laurence NICOLSON, born 1809, Bayanne, Sellafirth, North Yell, son of Olla NICOLSON and Ann
IRVINE
; In the YHRD there are 265 matches making this a very frequently occuring haplotype.  As
would be expected the matches are scattered from Portugal to Sweden, however the participant
matches 3 of 69 Greenland Inuit (mixed).  There are, however, only 5 matches at the 12/12 level with
individuals in the FTDNA customer database.  Refering to the Haplogroup Database confirms that this
is a rare signature, and at the 11/12 level the only match is with someone from Italy (Sicily).  At the
two step mutational level there is a scattering of matches with the largely countries including
Germany, Denmark and Sweden, and, significantly, none from Portugal or Spain as one sees in Celtic
signatures.  In addition, at the 3 step level there are matches in Norway and again a Greenland Inuit
(European admixture).  One high resolution match - 33/37 with LAURENSON (19078)
;  Since it is
expected that the Inuit signatures had their origin in Norway, it would appear that the weight of
evidence suggests that this participant has one of the rare Norse signatures that can be attributed to
Scandanavia.  The match with LAURENSON is unlikely to be random and needs to be explored
.

(21829)
R1b;  Scottish Mainland - Celtic / Pictish;  Place name from the old barony of Nesbit in the parish of
Edrom, Berwickshire.  Name not found in Orkney.  According to Beattie, "Mans Nisbet and Rollf
Nesbet were in Yell in 1538.  The name has always been closely associated with the islands of Yell and
Unst"
; None recorded;  Peter NISBET, born 1772, Burraness, North Yell, married to Marion
ANDERSON, and son of Peter NISBET
; In the YHRD there are only 3 matches, none diagnostic.  In
the FTDNA customer database there is one match with an Adams.  In the Haplogroup Database there
are close matches from Portugal to Poland as is typical of Celtic haplotypes
; Although rare this
signature has a match profile that is best interpreted as native Scottish or Briton
.

I1a;  Aboriginal Shetland - Norse: European;  Patronymic;  None reported;  Robert NICOLSON,
born mid 1700s, Walls, son of Nicol ROBERTSON
; There is only one match in the FTDNA customer
database and it is 24/25 with SMITH (33398) .  In the Haplogroup Database the vast majority of
matches are with Norway, and particularly Iceland, as well as the Faroe Islands.  In the FTDNA REO
Database there is an and unidentified individual whose ancestor is from Denmark who the participant
matches 24/25
; This is a classic Norse signature.  The high resolution match with SMITH suggests an
ancestor in common at some point in the past.  Hopefully this matter can be explored with
genealogical record sources
