Nelles inherited the Astawenserontha Bear Clan title of Tahanata / Tahatonne ("Between the Pine Trees") in 1817 after his kinsman Upper Mohawk Chief Francis Cotter left in that year to join the Wyandot at Anderdon Township, Ontario. *** Step - brother of Captain Joseph Brant Thayendinagea, head of the Upper Mohawks. Some children may have used BRANT surname, others perhaps HILL, and others apparently no surname. **** Sister of Captain David Hill Karonghyontye / Astawenserontha, head of the Lower Mohawks; also Captain Aaron Hill Kanonraron, Lt. John Hill Oterouyanente; as well as Mary Hill Katehriunigh the head woman of the Ft. Hunter Mohawks. |
